The marker light project. Whilst welding work was being undertaken to the front of Cab 2, the old seized marker light assembly’s were removed including what was left of the lamp holders. Originally we were looking to replace with an LED version, which I believe was mentioned in an earlier edition of the NL. The problem with this, as we discovered, was how do you mount the LED cluster (which was going to be a cool white/red combination) and allow for adjustments in height and aim, as this would have been crucial with this option. When the flip over red/clear lens assembly was removed, it was placed in our newly acquired ultrasonic cleaning tank and surprisingly for something that was seized solid, cleaned up pretty well!
Mike set about seeing if it would disassemble and free off and it did indeed with some success. After various discussions on this the decision was made to see if these could be repaired and parts fabricated as may be required. In steps our Treasurer, Ian Kennett, and he duly takes them away for homework and to see what his brother in law, Simon, could do with them. "No problem" Simon said "I can sort the lens assemblies out and how many lamp holders do you want, is Stainless Steel ok?"! Simon has been doing many off site jobs for us towards the refurbishment of 'Reg' including the manufacture of new radiator grill covers, re-bushed brake rigging, rain chutes for the cab drop light windows (one now fitted) refurbished the roof vents (which are like new) to name but a few items. His skills as a tool maker & fabricator together with the quality of what he produces is truly outstanding and we are very much indebted to him and his skills. Simon also looked into replacing the red lens, due to the scratching on it, but could not find the right colour.

The solution was to dig out his polishing kit and with some hours of work the result is clear (or should that be red!) in the picture below. Another superb job!
