DISPATCHED TO SIMS METALS, NEWPORT, FOR SCRAP ON 19TH AUGUST 2011.
With no prospect of the restoration restarting, which would have included the changing out of the wheelsets
(the middle axle is missing anyway), the decision was taken to realise the cash value of the asset, especially in
view of the current market conditions for scrap metal. Numerous parts and components were removed into storage
(not the main generator or motors, sadly, for obvious reasons) before the remains were collected by
Antell's low-loader for the trip to the breakers.
Dual-braked 08734 at Lydney Jcn; still under restoration (April 2010) although the work has been suspended for
due to the arrival of bigger locos in need of restoration, in the last few years. Apart from some of the more obvious stuff,
work still in-hand includes rewiring which had been only partially completed by mid-2003.
There is no middle axle fitted in this view but the intention is to remove the 3 axles currently
under 08473 and put them beneath 08734. (photo B.Thomas, 17th May 2003)
